Alan Gartside awarded Torch Trophy

Congratulations to Alan Gartside who will be awarded a Torch Trophy on Tuesday 24 February in London by the Countess of Wessex. The Torch Trophy Trust is a charity that recognises and rewards volunteers in sport and recreation, committed to recognising the unsung heroes of sport through bursaries to enable individuals to develop their skills, and by commemorating some of their achievements at the annual Torch Trophy Trust Awards. Alan’s trophy is in recognition of the many years of service to orienteering in Northern Ireland, particularly for his key role in developing Trail Orienteering and map printing.

Irish Orienteering Championships – Volunteers

The Club is hosting the Irish Championships that includes an IOF World Ranking Event over the weekend of 1 to 4 May and with six events we need a good number of officials to stage them. Ann Savage has taken on the job of volunteer recruitment and will be keen to talk to all club members on Saturday at Crawfordsburn and in subsequent weeks. Otherwise you could contact her at annsavage@ballyhayroad.co.uk. We will try as best as possible to let all officials have a run. Please volunteer and support your Club in staging this major event. IntrO is back!

There will be a PreO course available on Saturday next, before the start of the NIScore Champs, which will count towards the 2015 PreO Champs.  It will consist of 4 controls packed into a 160m course from the Scout camp gate to the Score start area.  It will be removed once the Score event is under way so make sure you give it time in order to meet the 14:30 Score start time. If you haven’t entered the Score Champs yet get in contact with Ann Savage as soon as possible – I have my finger poised over the printer Read More …

Wait for it!

The equipment check at Kilwee has been postponed for a week.  It will now take place at 11:00 on 14th February.  Show your love of the sport on St Valentines day and come and lend a hand.

Meelmore Contour Training

The junior squad, as well as a number of adults, took to the hills at Meelmore to practice the use of contours as a navigation aid. It was a great sunny day but snow still lay on the ground as well as a lot of ice. The rivers were cold as well if you fell in!!. This was an excellent opportunity to get those cobwebs blown away after the festive season. It was also ideal training for the Lisburn O Festival in May as the races there will include Slieve Croob.

1, 2, miss a few…… 99, 100!

If you read the Tale of Two Sprints, published in the  December 2014 edition of CompassSport, then you will know that an adventure awaits you, Read More …
