WEE 3 and NI Urban League – Ballywalter

Note: For this event there will be three courses, Short, Medium and Long. Note that the Medium course would be equivalent to the Long course at other WEEs and that under 16s may only enter the Short course.

The Short Course is approximately 2km in length and has relatively simple navigation. This is really well suited to children and family groups who are out for an explore. It is also popular with seasoned orienteers who do not want too physical a run.

The Medium Course (equivalent to the Long course at other WEEs) is approximately 4km in length and the navigation is more challenging. It is best suited for runners looking for more adventure and best suited to adults or juniors who have reached their 16th birthday, with navigational experience.

The Long Course is approximately 6km in length and the navigation is more challenging. It is best suited for runners looking for a longer adventure and best suited to adults or juniors who have reached their 16th birthday, with navigational experience.

How the NI Urban League works

• Similar league set up to the WEE but in urban locations over the whole of NI, involving all three NI clubs.
• Participants earn league points at each event with the best three results counting.
• The NIUL uses an age- and gender-adjusted scoring system, so competitors of different ages and sexes can compete fairly against one another in a single league table.
• Points are calculated from adjusted race times, with the fastest adjusted time receiving the highest score.

Who can take part?

The league is open to:

• Experienced orienteers looking for competitive urban races.
• Beginners and Improvers who want to try navigating in a town or park environment.
• Juniors and adults of all ages, with the handicap system helping to level the competition.

Coming at the end of a WEE Series, this event is a perfect finale for those interested in seeing where you stand in relation to other club members. It will be a fun step up for regular WEE participants to participate in a NI competition. It is also great just to visit another area to explore and have fun!

Starts: 6.30pm – 7.30pm. Start will be a short walk from registration. If you have registered online and do not need any equipment, please go directly to the start lane.

Course Closed: 8.30pm. Finish is close to registration/download.

Sociable group / family fee where all are going round a course together – entry fee is per required number of maps – one entry = one map. There is no fee to hire an SI card if required, but lost cards are charged at £30.

**A family charge is for two seniors and one junior. Additional juniors go free.

Medium Course – approx 4km (equivalent to Long at other WEEs).

Short Course – approx 2km. Only under 16s may enter the short course and must use the pelican crossing.

There will be a first aid and a qualified first aider available at registration. Registration is also a safe place for children to wait.

Please do not come to the event if you are unwell.

Please bring and carry any medication you might need, especially inhalers and EpiPen’s.

If you come across an injured or ill person, please stop, help and get further help. There will likely be qualified first aiders on the course who can stop to provide support.

All participants must return to download, whether they complete the course or not. This is to account for all competitors, ensuring everyone’s safe return.

Courses will close and controls collected in at 8.30pm sharp. If you are still out on the course at this time return to finish and download immediately.

A waterproof jacket may also be mandatory if the organisers decide the weather requires one, so bring one along just in case.

Dogs are permitted in the carpark and on the course, however common sense control of dogs applies.
