Terrain Summary | If you have visited Glenariff you are likely to have walked one of the four Forest Trails, perhaps following the Glenariff or Inver River and paused at the famous waterfalls or cliffs or looked at the spectacular views down the Glens. But you are not likely to have gone into the main body of the forest.
Courses are at the lower end of the lengths as Glenariff is likely to prove physically demanding. There are a few paths made by mountainbikes, and 2 gravel forest roads but other wise the forest is free of paths. The forest is mainly tall coniferous trees with the forest floor being ridges covered in deep moss with minor water channels. There are large windblown areas which are mapped. But the forest also has multiple unmapped single fallen trees which are negotiable. The map has numerous parallel rides in forest blocks which are not mapped. Major rides separating blocks of forest are mapped. (At registration we will have a sample of the map that we are using and a sample map with rides to illustrate the difference). Significant features are mapped in any given part of the forest but this does result in some variation across the map. |

Previous Maps/Routegadget | There are no previous courses / maps available.
Glenariff was previously mapped in 2004 by Deeside Orienteering and used in 2004 and 2005 but has had a complete new survey done by Mark Stephens for 2024 Control descriptions will be printed on the map. Loose control descriptions will be available at the Start. TD1-3 courses will be both pictorial and textual |

First Aid and Safety | There will be a first aid and a qualified first aider available at registration. Registration is also a safe place for lost children to wait.
Please do not come to the event if you are unwell. Please bring and carry any medication you might need, especially inhalers and EpiPen’s. If you come across an injured or ill person, please stop, help and get further help. There will likely be qualified first aiders on the course who can stop to provide support. Phone coverage appears to be generally poor and intermittent in this area. All participants must return to download, whether they complete the course or not. This is to account for all competitors, ensuring everyone’s safe return. Courses will close at 3pm sharp in order to give sufficient time to collect in controls. If you are still out on the course at this time return to finish and download immediately. Please take into consideration your ability and fitness when choosing which start block to enter to give yourself the best chance of completing your course. |
