A good and mixed crowd enjoyed last week’s WENT in Ormeau Park – thanks to Helen for setting out the controls in my absence. This week we have the privilege of using Antrim Castle Gardens at night. The area is terrific for night orienteering, with a nice mix of parkland, tracks and wooded areas. For anyone free this Wednesday afternoon there will be a small training event being run in Barnets (Malone House car park). Registration from 1230 and starts from 1300-1400. Courses will be Lt Green and Orange.  Cost £3.50.  Our penultimate Craigavon Orienteers’ event for 2017. Come and join us for a wee jaunt around the Lake on Sunday afternoon. Courses on offer will be Yellow, Orange, Light Green, and Green. The final positions in the Autumn Trophy are now available in the “Club Colour Series” folder in the LVO Cloud.  Follow “Contact us>Documents>Public documents”.  The competition is based on place points, with your best (i.e. lowest) two scores to count.  To be considered one has to have recorded 2 finishes in a class – shown by an asterisk against your entry.

Exciting times – we’ve got some Facebook changes today.  Our Group remains, with a name change to LVO Club Discussion Group.  Our Page also remains – Lagan Valley Orienteers – it’s a great public face for the club in the world of Facebook. It’ll shortly be cheerio to the WEE Series Orienteering page (but not the WEE Series itself, very importantly it’s still here!!). Congratulations and commiserations to the intrepid 2 dozen who braved the weather last week in Lady Dixon Park. I hope we will be more fortunate this week as we return to Ormeau Park to continue with the SnookerO theme. The controls will not be in the same places as for WENT 1 and the challenge to get round them all may be a bit stiffer than usual. Meet in the main carpark at 7.00pm for a 7.30 mass start. £2 for members, £4 for guests – all are most welcome.

Our latest Craigavon Community Orienteers’ event. Another newly extended map and in my mind incorporating some of the best bits of the park, previously not included on the old map. I know i’m a little late in posting but the lurgy has had the better of me for most of the week. After a glorious evening in Botanic Gardens and the Queen’s campus, with a view of the spectacular poppy installation at the Ulster Museum, we return to SnookerO, this time at Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park. Meet on Wednesday evening in the top car park at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm mass start as usual. Use the session to prepare for the WENT Finale, also in Dixon Park; will Santa’s elves and the gremlins get involved this year? Come and find out and be prepared for damp feet.

A very small (but elite!) field undertook the challenge of the timed control at Carnfunnock last Saturday.  The results are: Rachel Collins 4 correct: 28secs Gordon Stephens (preO score 6) 4 correct: 43secs Frazer Howe 4 correct 43secs Richard Williamson (preO score 6) 3 correct: 44secs + 60sec penalty = 104secs Cecil Armstrong 2 correct: 86secs + 120sec penalty = 206secs Mark Pruzina (preO score 7) 4 correct: time exceeded = 360secs Three people completed both parts  (Crawfordsburn and Carnfunnock) of the LVO TrailO Championship so it is my pleasure to congratulate Mark Pruzina on becoming the LVO TrailO Champion Read More …
