Rankin & Graham

A week ago LVO club member Greg McCann, together with running partner Jim Patterson, stood at (at 2am!) the start of the Denis Rankin round with the prospect of 24 hours in the mountains ahead of them. They were attempting the “Denis Rankin Round“. I’m delighted to report Greg and Jim finished the round, with time to spare. They thus become the newest members of the Rankin Round club. You can see their route and splits here. Congratulations Greg and Jim. Meanwhile, in the Lake District Andrew and Alan Elwood were underway with their attempt at the “Bob Graham Round“. Read More …

LVO go for Denis Rankin & Bob Graham Rounds

(corrected live tracking link added) This weekend the Tollymore Festival of Orienteering wasn’t just a big enough challenge for some of our members. In the early hours of Saturday morning (2am) Greg McCann will start on the Denis Rankin round with his partner Jim Patterson, veteran fell runner and local legend. They plan to walk the complete route in under 24 hours. A previous attempt missed out by 30 minutes but additional training, revised strategy and planning should be the recipe for success. The back up team includes Tich and Aine McCann. We wish them every success. As if that Read More …

Joint winners – the Steve McGibbon Trophy

At the recent LVO AGM three nominations were received for the Steve McGibbon Trophy. This trophy is awarded annually for contributions to orienteering by members of LVO. It honours the memory of LVO member Steve McGibbon who died in 2006 aged only 51. Under normal circumstances the trophy would be awarded by Christine McGibbon but that was not possible this year due to a “virtual” AGM. Our photographer managed to catch up with this years joined trophy winners – Harry Bell and Mark Pruzina who will share the trophy for the next six months. Thank-you from club members for all Read More …

Mourne Seven Sevens 2020 – Cancelled

Lagan Valley Orienteers regret to announce that due to the impact of Coronavirus we are not able to hold the Mourne Seven Sevens Challenge Walk this year. We have been working over the past few months to design measures that would address the additional safety and logistical challenges posed by Covid 19. We made some excellent progress and, having solved many of the issues, we were cautiously optimistic of going ahead. Unfortunately, however, some of the external factors out of our control such as access permissions and government Covid regulations have not progressed far enough at this stage for us Read More …
