Tyrella Report – Junior Interregional Champs and Colour Series

What a brilliant weekend of Orienteering!

Saturday saw the Individual Races for the Junior Regional Championships and the NI Colour Series.

👏Well done to all NI Junior team members battling against 168 of the best juniors from across the UK in some fantastic but challenging courses. A special mention to James Ewart who finished 9th in his first year as M14 and Anastasia who finished 10th in W16 – great runs!

Later in the day the courses in Tyrella were opened up for a NI Colour Series event which entertained another 112 competitors including many visiting UK coaches, pitting their wits with the terrain that their juniors had just faced, and even a couple of international visitors from Israel.

Well done everyoe!

On Sunday the Juniors returned to the sand dunes for a fun morning of relay racing. This year it was great to see three NI junior relay teams competing.

👍Well done coach Steph for helping get so many of our young people not just up to speed with the skills needed to tackle the challenges of competitive racing in the most technical areas but the confidence to enjoy the experience.

👏A very busy weekend not just for the Juniors (who were wrecked after two O events, a nights craic with the Alastair Scott Ceilidh Band 🥁🎻🎤 and 2 nights of little sleep) but for all the wonderful volunteers who made it such a success. Thanks especially to weekend coordinator Stephen Gilmore, day organisers, Alan & Andrew Elwood and Gavin & Heather Cairns. Also course planners and controllers, Philip Baxter, Billy & Chloe Reed and Brian Johnston. It was also so encouraging to see so many volunteers from the club involved, some stepping in to fill vital roles in a big event for the first time which may have felt quite daunting – you did brilliantly, thank you so much!

👍Thanks to the Army who allowed us access at Ballykinler and lunches for 2 nights/days to 200 hungry mouths. Also a huge thank you for the welcome we received from Shimna Integrated College who stepped in at the last minute to provide us with accommodation, the Principal and Facilities team couldn’t have been more helpful.
