This event is Day 1 of the 3 Day Tollymore Festival of Orienteering which includes the Warrenpoint Urban race on Friday; a NI Colour Series event on Saturday; camping at Tollymore and a BBQ after the race on Saturday, and the LVO Score Championships on Sunday. Registration, Start and Finish Start Times – 18:30 – 20:00.

Parking: Either Clonallon Park, or on the road outside Mary Queen of Peace Church (27 Clonallon Rd, Warrenpoint, Newry BT34 3RP)

Registration, Starts and Finish: Clonallon Park, opposite the church.  Please take care along the road between Parking and Starts / Registration / Finish.  Juniors should be accompanied.

Sociable group / family fee where all are going round a course together – entry fee is per required number of maps – one entry = one map. There is no fee to hire an SI card if required, but lost cards are charged at £30.

**A family charge is for two seniors and one junior. Additional juniors go free.

Terrain Summary Usual urban terrain – pavements, roads and parklands. Some roads may be busy and should be crossed with care.

Course Notes Short – 3.1km + 50m climb – This is the only course suitable for unaccompanied Juniors under the age of 16 (age on the day)
Medium – 5.5km + 65m climb – Juniors under 16yrs old must be accompanied on this course.
Long – 8.3km + 100m climb – Juniors under 16yrs old must be accompanied on this course.Short and Long courses will have a map flip.  Note that the Long course map flip will also change map orientation from Landscape to Portrait!

  • All maps are 1:4000 and 2.5m contours.
  • A3 Maps for Medium and Long coures
  • A4 Map for the Short course
  • Map was surveyed April 2024 and updated June 2025.
  • All course distances are provisional and subject to final controlling.

Planner’s notes:

  • The Short/Junior course is limited in length by the availability of safe terrain, but does include some ‘proper’ urban orienteering of equivalent difficulty to the Medium / Long courses.  It may not be suitable for younger or inexperienced juniors.
  • Please be aware that courses close at 9pm, and some gates may be locked at that time, so you will need to be quick if starting late on the Long course!
First Aid and Safety Take care on all roads, use footpaths when possible.

The Short course is the only one suitable for Juniors under the age of 16 yrs on the day as it does not involve un-marshalled road crossings or areas where there is likely to concerns over vehicle traffic.  There will be 1 marshalled road crossing on the short course – competitors must obey the marshal’s instructions at all times.

Juniors under 16yrs old wanting to run the Medium or Long courses MUST be accompanied by an adult.

There will be first aid and a qualified first aider available at registration. Registration is also a safe place for lost children to wait.

Please do not come to the event if you are unwell. Please bring and carry any medication you might need, especially inhalers and EpiPen’s.

If you come across an injured or ill person, please stop, help and get further help. There will likely be qualified first aiders on the course who can stop to provide support.

All participants must return to download, whether they complete the course or not. This is to account for all competitors, ensuring everyone’s safe return.

Courses will close and controls collected in at 9pm sharp. If you are still out on the course at this time return to finish and download immediately.

Kit requirements Shorts and running vests are permitted for this race. Shoes with spikes and metal dobs are not allowed.

Toilets Nearest public toilets are in Warrenpoint Square or beside the Whistledown Hotel, inside the entrance to Warrenpoint Park.
