Toilets are down at the other carpark near the café.

Event Info

This is the second of two training activities, (i.e. not formal, so no results published), to help prepare us for the LVO Club Score Champs on 12 February.

Score events do not have a fixed course but a fixed time to collect as many controls as you possibly can, choosing your own route within the time limit.

There is a ‘mass’ start – everyone starts at the same time and so, in theory, should all finish together 45 minutes later – so it is a fun, social event.  The start will still be a punch start, and there will be a punch finish.

Registration at 1.30pm.

Briefing at 1:50pm.

We will split into groups again so that the experienced orienteers can start and then pick up the map, while novices can have a couple of minutes to look and plan and perhaps discuss their route choice first. Score orienteering is where you choose your own route to visit as many controls as you can within a 45 minute time limit, (30 mins for juniors).

Crawfordsburn has 4 main areas so check out how you want to approach each of these and where to go first to optimise your points. The area is hilly so again you should consider what will be the fastest and most achievable route for you.  Scoring the same as last week ie

101 – 110 worth 10

111- 115 worth 20

116- 120 worth 30

121- 123 worth 40

124- 125 worth 50 points.

There is a 10 point penalty for every minute or part of a minute over time. The time limit is 45 mins or 30 minutes for younger juniors.

Be careful, the Scout Centre to the west of the map is fully fenced with only one access road in and out. There is an error on the map showing an open gate in the NE corner of the fence but this gate will be locked. Also within the Scout area a small path alongside the fence made of a raised board walk is in a dangerous state of disrepair. Do not attempt to use it.

Other safety points are as usual – the terrain will be muddy and slippery, there are steep slopes and open water in the river. I have marked the main car park out of bounds and you should not run across it, but you will have to cross the access roads which can have a surprising amount of traffic. Be aware of and considerate to other park users.

Kit/Equipment

Shoes with good grip are recommended due to the slippery slopes and leaf accumulations.

This is a non-competitive activity and everyone is welcome to attend. You can go round as an individual or a pair/group.

All the usual kit, full body cover, compass plus a watch to keep an eye on your timing. Every minute (or part of a minute) late will have a 10 point deduction.

If weather is poor a whistle and waterproof coat may be mandatory.

Entries and Cost

If you intend to go, please message Ric Gamble chairperson@lvo.org.uk by Thursday 26 Jan, for the correct number of maps to be printed.

Note:

  • Map bags may not be available, so if you have one, please bring your own waterproof map cover.
