Event Description

OCO Cordially invite you all to an afternoon of mental massage around the paths and green spaces of Craigavon South.
This Event will be the second leg of this year’s NI Urban League and consequently I wouldn’t want to disappoint any of you Urban fans. For your delight we will be using a newly extended map ( as if you need any more stress ) and as ever, I’m planning all the fun. I’m laughing already.

Assembly & Registration: Moyraverty Centre Car Park.
///What3words: sunblock.fried.search ( I love all these combinations of words – I don’t know how they come up with them but they often seem apt. Hopefully not on this occasion)

Toilets: Please note that whilst there are 2 local shops for drinks and snacks, there are no toilets at Registration. Please use the ones in the underground car park of Rushmere shopping Centre, or in Tesco’s prior to attendance.

Registration: From 2:00 p.m.
Start & Finish: Both Start and Finish are adjacent to the Car Park so you can cheer people off and they can cheer you home. We have plenty of green space to be sociable in after your run, or for seeking psychological help.
Start times: 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Courses Close: 5:00 p.m.

Warm up Area: this will be restricted to the car park itself. Everywhere else is part of the competition area.

Courses:
Short: 2.7 km, 19 Controls,  A4 1:3000 Scale Map – a perfect introduction to Urban Orienteering for beginners and family groups
Medium: 5.1 km, 26 Controls, A3 1:3000ish
Long: 7.9 km, 33 Controls, 1:4000 Double sided A4

These are optimal distances. i.e. if you manage not to be outwitted. The actual distance travelled could spiral significantly if I get inside your head.

The Short Course is entirely free of vehicular traffic. There are no road crossings and consequently I deem it perfectly safe for all teens and above to be able to navigate on their own. For 12’s and under I would still recommend that the juniors are either accompanied or shadowed. Whilst there is no traffic, we are still in an urban environment and safeguarding concerns need to be taken into account as well as H & S.
Please note that for any adult wishing to shadow a Junior and then have their own run afterwards, they will be classed as Non-Comp in the results having entered the competition area prior to competing themselves.

Any under 16’s wishing to complete the Medium or Long Courses will need to be accompanied by an over 16 year old.

SI Air: Please note SI Air will not be enabled.

Terrain: A mix of typical Housing Executive, and private housing estates with lots of paths and cycleways, lots of green spaces littered with trees, and with occasional patches of Meadow. Very runnable but you will need to concentrate on the map to select the right route choices. I recommend Trail shoes.

Dogs: Dogs are allowed within the Competition Area but please respect all other users of the area by keeping your dogs on a lead whilst running.

Entry Fees:
Seniors ( aged 21 & over ) – Individual run: £ 8
Juniors: £ 4
Sociable / family group fee: where all are going round a course together – entry fee is per required number of maps i.e. one entry = one map.

  1. Hi ya
Would this event be suitable for beginners.

I’m a teacher in St Ronan’s College and I’m tying to get access to orienteering competitions for my students
