| Terrain Summary | The terrain is urban, so most of the running is on tarmac with interspersed patches of open grass. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Previous Maps/Routegadget | The area was used in 2022 for the NI Urban League event: https://www.lvo.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#489 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Course Notes | This is an urban event with none of the terrain difficulty associated with forest or open mountain courses. This means faster running, so courses are longer than normal and designed to produce winning times closer to those achieved in shorter, tougher terrain.
As with usual colour courses, leg lengths vary with a good mix of long, medium and short legs for each colour, with plenty of route choice and detailed navigation throughout.
Note that Brown course runners will need a dibber capable of recording 34 controls – the old LVO hire dibbers will not suffice. There will be a supply of NIOA SIACs for loan if necessary. The Yellow course has been planned to TD2 (no more than 2 decision points between controls with controls sited on or within sight of handrail features) but may prove a challenge to newer and younger competitors unused to urban orienteering, so shadowing for safety is encouraged. Where the shadower also plans to compete, he or she should complete their run first. All the other courses are, as is normal in urban terrain, at TD3 but with as many route choices as possible on most legs without becoming long Sprint courses. Although there is little traffic activity on a Sunday morning, due care must be taken when crossing any roads within the estates. The major routes have all been marked as uncrossable, with underpass or bridge options to choose. The Yellow and Orange courses have a manned crossing early in their run with a short taped route up to the next handrail. |

| First Aid and Safety | There will be a first aid and a qualified first aider available at registration. Registration is also a safe place for lost children to wait.
Please do not come to the event if you are unwell. Please bring and carry any medication you might need, especially inhalers and EpiPen’s. If you come across an injured or ill person, please stop, help and get further help. There will likely be qualified first aiders on the course who can stop to provide support. All participants must return to download, whether they complete the course or not. This is to account for all competitors, ensuring everyone’s safe return. Courses will close and controls collected in at 3pm sharp. If you are still out on the course at this time return to finish and download immediately. |

Good article. The ideas in “NI Colour Series 6” connect well with what I have been researching recently.
