Event Description
First of all folks, anyone who can offer to help at this event will be welcomed with open arms! And you’ll still get a run, of course.
Now that spring is here (really?) orienteering is heading to the hills! We’re off to beautiful Meelmore in the Mourne Mountains for the second Northern Ireland Colour Series event of the year. Experienced competitors will enjoy the challenging courses that Mark Stephens has planned on this great orienteering terrain but remember there are courses too for all ages and abilities. Newcomers are especially welcome.
Parking is at Meelmore Lodge and there are toilets close to the car park. If you want a shower, please drop a contribution into the honesty box at the MOO – I’m sure Meelmore Lodge would appreciate it. There is also a cosy cafe where we can meet up afterwards and enjoy a meal or a coffee. Meelmore Lodge always welcomes orienteers (muddy feet and all) so please support them if you can.
Dogs are not allowed, except in the immediate vicinity of Meelmore Lodge.
Course | Length | Climb |
Brown | 6.5k | 210m |
Blue | 5.3k | 180m |
Green | 3.7k | 170m |
Short Green | 2.9k | 140m |
Light Green | 2.6k | 85m |
Orange | 2.7k | 115m |
Yellow | 1.7k | 80m |
Remember we’re on exposed mountain and although the calendar says it’s summer time the weather man says its winter. The mountain is extremely wet from this week’s rain and there is a lot of water in the streams and the Trassey river. Please choose a course that is appropriate to your experience.
Unfortunately the nature of the terrain means we are not able to provide a White course.
The Yellow course is on the open mountain. It does not stay close to the wall as published earlier but it is on paths. Unfortunately the mountain is not baby buggy friendly.
There is a 1k walk to the Start. The walk includes some rough ground so it might take you longer that you think.
It’s mandatory to carry a whistle (you can buy one at Registration). If this week’s wintry weather persists you will be required to wear a suitable weatherproof coat. Please bring one with you as a final decision will be made on the morning of the event.
