Event Description

PRE-ENTRIES CLOSE – 9th November

PARKING will be an issue, as there is very limited space in the carpark, and there will be normal park users as well.

Please consider carsharing.  Please think of quick starting and quick getaway.  There is not even space for the MOO!

Cairn Wood is a delightful established forest, and very suitable for those competitors wishing to step up from learning courses.  Large and medium paths will help juniors, and all routes lead back to the central main path to the car park.

Courses

There will be four courses to pick from this year rather than the three we previously put on, so definitely something for everyone:

🟡Yellow, 1.3km  –  a beginner course specifically suited to children or families to explore together

🟠Orange, 2.1km  –  an improvers course, for children with orienteering experience or beginner adults who want a bit more adventure off the beaten track.

🟢Short Green, 3.1km  –  a technically challenging course but not too long and physical.

🔵Short Blue, 4.8km  –  a longer and more physical, technically difficult course.

Scale will be 1:5,000 and contour interval is 5m.

Cairn Wood is a mixed forest with established trees, many deliberate decayed areas, and now, several heavily defined paths for walkers and families.  But there are many smaller other paths and some lovely free running areas, criss-crossed with ditches and streams.  There is a general hillside towards a quarry running along the south west. Much of wood to the south west has also been cut to leave open areas of high vegetation.

It is heavily used by dog walkers, so be careful at the start and finish.

The start is 2 minutes from the car park along a main path, and the finish is 1minute from the carpark along the main path.

Yellow and Orange courses will have text and symbol control descriptions available.

Start Times  11:00-13:00

Parking

Parking is very restricted, and there are usually plenty of dog walkers and families also visiting, so please please carshare if possible, and also consider quick starting and quick getaway.  There is no space for parking on the road or anywhere nearby.

Thus, any starters wanting a possibly earlier start are welcome, to help spread the carparking load.

Toilets and facilities

There is a toilet in the carpark.

There is a cracking wee coffee and bun van in the carpark

Registration/Start/Finish

Inside the main gate at the start of all paths at end of the carpark

Safety

Whistles and full leg cover is recommended  as the undergrowth is still full. Also bring along a waterproof top may also be mandatory if forecast is unkind.

All competitors MUST visit the download station even if you do not finish your course. Otherwise, unnecessary time will be spent looking for you. Courses close at 14.30. Safety bearing : downhill towards the road.

  1. Hi there

I was just wondering if I would be able to enter the Cairn Woord event on the day tomorrow, and if so what time I should aim to be there?

    Many thanks
