A week after Storm Éowyn it is apparent that some of our forested areas have been hit hard, but others have been pretty much unscathed. As a club we need an audit to work out how this will affect our fixture list, so we need “boots on the ground” to check over all our mapped woodlands. This is quite an extensive task so it’s necessary to mobilise the club. No special skills are required, other than basic experience of orienteering!
So what is involved? Listed here are the various maps that need to be checked, so please look at the list and volunteer to check over an area convenient to you. When you have selected an area from the list email Stephen to reserve the area. For some of the larger areas it will probably be prudent to divide the area among several members, so it’s absolutely fine to indicate that you can check part of a mapped area. Some areas are still closed by landowners, so please wait until public access is permitted.
If you have an old map course map of the area then simply take a photocopy (black and white is OK), or alternatively Stephen can send you a pdf to print. Take a walk through the area and if there is no noticeable damage (beyond the odd tree or branch down here and there) then that’s great to just report that. That will be good news! However if you do find windblown areas, then please indicate these with a red pen on your copy and email a scan or a photo(s) of the map to Stephen. Just a rough indication is fine – we are not looking for accurate mapping!
Thanks for your help.
