Event Description

WENT 2 – Eastside Belfast

Organiser/planner – Ric Gamble (Email: rdo@niorienteering.org.uk; Mob: 07717297676)

As our first WENT was cancelled due to poor weather, our first training session is set to take place on the streets of East Belfast. Sure to be fast and fun!

This will take the form of a MapRun (GPS based smart phone/watch) Score course.

If you haven’t done this before, MapRun does not require physical controls (boxes and flags) or dibbers but uses the GPS function on your phone/watch to locate where you are. When you have navigated to the correct control point on your map, your smart phone/watch will register you being there.

The mapped course has 30 controls each worth 20 points. You have 45 minutes to collect as many as possible, in any order you choose, and get back to the finish. If late you will be deducted 10 points per minute (or part thereof). The optimal route is approximately 10k, so you will doing well to get them all!

Kit

Head torch – make sure it has good battery life. If you need one please let me know beforehand if you need to borrow one.

Hi-Viz clothing.

Phone or Garmin watch with MapRun app installed and with your details registered. See here for installation instructions.

If wet, a waterproof jacket will also be mandatory.

Please come appropriately dressed for the conditions – if cold, layer up and consider wearing a hat, gloves and buff.

Enter before 7.30pm on Tuesday 7 November.

Enter online here through Eventbrite or email Ric (rdo@niorienteering.org.uk)

Registration and Parking

Registration will be at Tim Hortons Coffee shop at 7.15pm. There is plenty of parking in this area but the car park here is busy.

Start/Finish

Be warmed up and ready to register at 7.15pm, there is a short walk to the start which will be at 7.30pm.

Safety

This can be a busy area for traffic and clearly there are roads to cross – use crossing points marked on the map. The course has been planned to use these marked crossing points as optimal routes.

Any participant under the age of 16 must be accompanied, on the entire run, by an adult.

Out of bounds areas in busy car parks are shown as hatched areas on the map.

If you need to retire early, please return to Tim Hortons and sign out before going home. Ric will be based there or close by with first aid – see number above.

Facilities

Toilets at Tim Hortons and why not stay afterwards and discuss your route choices over a cuppa and a well earned donut.
