Event Description

Introduction

RESCHEDULED DATE Saturday 25th March. Too snowy on the original date ☃️ Entries re-opening soon 🤗

Don’t miss our first Spring Trophy event of 2023

This event is on private farm and forestry land and is an opportunity to see some of the most beautiful views in County Down. Those on the longer courses may enjoy a stunning view towards the Mourne Mountains, and keep an eye out for red kites overhead.

Courses on offer are Short Blue, Short Green, Orange and Yellow.

This area has no paths / tracks and therefore those orienteers doing the Yellow and Orange courses will have to use line features to aid navigation. The terrain wouldn’t be suitable for buggies – it’s a fun adventure for little legs!

No dogs please, as this is sheep farming land. You will have to cross some fences – please report any damage to us at the finish so we can head out to repair it.

We have marked some suitable crossing points on the map but they are NOT mandatory.

YELLOW – 1.2km / 100m climb – for younger children & family groups, as well as more cautious new adults

ORANGE – 1.7km / 135m climb – for children & family groups moving on from yellow, as well as more adventurous new adults

SHORT GREEN – 2.8km / 195m climb – difficult orienteering, though not as physically demanding as the biggest course.  Generally for experienced orienteers, though a VERY adventurous new adult might give this a bash.

SHORT BLUE – 3.9km / 215m climb – difficult orienteering, our most challenging course on offer

Registration, Start Times and Closing Time

  • Registration will be alongside the car-park from 11:00. Allow 20 minutes to walk from registration to the start.
  • Starts are from 11:30 to 13:00.
  • Download is back in the car park – another 20 minute walk back from the finish.
  • Courses close at 15:00, at which time controls will be lifted.

Directions and Parking

Parking is off the Clonvaraghan Road at the Seeconnell Private Home. This is a private residential home, and we are grateful to the management for their use of the car-park. Please respect their wishes to park in the zone shown below or as directed on the day (do NOT wander around the building or intrude on the privacy of the residents in any way). Keep entrances/exits clear.

There are no toilet facilities and please do not ask to use any in the Home.

Safety

Escape route: A road completely circumnavigates Slieve Garron so in the worst case going downhill in any direction will take you to a road but unless there is an overriding factor escape is to the E to join the road.

Walk to/from the start: There will be a walk of 1km along country roads to/from the start. Please take care and children should be accompanied.

Exposed rock and steep mountain side: All courses have “cliffs” as features – these are generally only a couple of metres high but you should take care if approaching from above – go around rather than over please! The longer courses cover some steep mountain side but the course has been planned to avoid the worst of this.

This is exposed mountain terrain – please come prepared with the necessary warm kit if the weather looks ropey. Whistles are mandatory, and cagoules (waterproof coats) may be required – there will be signage on the day to confirm.
