Event Description

LVO are hosting Part 2 of a NIOA double whammy on the 13 November.

After loosening up on the middle distance courses at NICS Drumnaph, take the short trip (13 miles/24 mins) over to Portglenone Forest for the NIOA Night Champs.

Portglenone Forest is a lovely mixed, ancient woodland about 1/2 mile from the town centre on road to Ballymena.

Terrain and Courses

If you have never tried night orienteering in a forest before, this is the place to do it. The criss-crossing courses are contained within the an area of about 800m wide and 500m deep and surrounded on the north by a fence, east and south by a wall and the west by the River Bann. So if you get lost it won’t be for too long because a path or boundary will be nearby to help relocate.

Night courses are all classified as TD5 level, so all participants must be aged M/W16 or over.

There will be three courses, Long, Medium and Short. You may choose to run any course but to run competitively for the championships please choose the appropriate course. If you choose to run up a course you will be entered for the age category closest to your own age, unless you inform the organiser otherwise beforehand.

Long (3.9km, 22 controls): M18, M20, M21, M35, M40, M45, M50, W21,

Medium (3.3km, 19 controls): M16, M55, M60, M65, M70, W16, W18, W20, W35, W40, W45, W50, W55, W60,

Short (2.6km, 17 controls): M75+, W60, W65, W70, W75+

Due to the criss-cross nature of the courses, to avoid confusion, all three maps will have a map change (flip over map halfway round).

At this time of year, full arm and leg cover and a hat are highly recommended.
