Event Description

🙂 Everyone Welcome!

Anyone can enter and enjoy a run but only current LVO members can be classified as eligible/competitive for the title of Club Score Champion. Note: membership renewal is due on the 1st January!

If you are fairly new to orienteering, don’t let the sound of club championship put you off – there are 3 different courses to choose from and you are welcome to run round as a pair or family/friendship group (although to be deemed competitive you need to enter as an individual).

⏰ A score event is different to a normal cross country orienteering event in that, there are a number of controls which you can visit in any order you wish within a set time. Controls may be worth different values and it is very unlikely that you will be able to visit them all. So, you will need to plan your best route to get back before the set time. Lateness back will bring point penalties.

🏃‍♀️ 3 Courses

1️⃣ Young Junior Course 1 is suitable for Primary School Children – courses stick close to paths, and the use of a compass is not necessary (technical difficulty 2). This is the MW8/10 Championship course and has a time limit of 30 minutes.

2️⃣ Junior/Novice Senior Course 2 is suitable for improving Juniors and novice adults – the ability to use compass and navigate away from paths is needed (technical difficulty 3/4). This is the MW12/14 Championship Course and also has a time limit of 45 minutes.

3️⃣ Senior Course 3 is suitable for competent orienteers (technical difficulty 4/5). Some controls will be placed far away and in physically and technically challenging terrain. This is the Senior Championship course for MW16s and over only. This course has a time limit of 60 minutes.

Time penalties – for every minute/part minute you are late you will be deducted 10 points on Course 1 and 20 points for courses 2 ad 3.

👟 Clothing, Safety and terrain conditions

The underfoot conditions on the main forest trails and deep in the forest is generally not too bad. However there are some very wet and muddy places, especially along the small forest paths which are cut up by mountain bikers, so wearing you nice white trainers is not a good idea. The better grip you can have, the better – to get up and over the earth walls, through small water channels and across steep slopes. The recent storms have had their effect, so apologies if some areas of runnable forest (marked white on the map) have areas with fallen trees.

❗ Full body cover and whistle for your safety is mandatory (3 long blasts signals distress, those coming to your assistance can reply with 1 long blast, continue 3 blasts every minute until assistance is with you). As it is winter, a waterproof jacket may also be a requirement. If this kit is requested and you turn up without it, sorry you will be turned away for your own safety – please adhere to officials instructions.

❗❗ Please remember to return to the registration and download after your run. This is not only to record your score/time but, more importantly, tells us you have safely returned. The first aid station will be based from the car park/registration.

🚗 Parking and toilet facilities

Car Parking will be in Woodburn Presbyterian Church Car Park. There are toilets located in the church hall building. On entry to the car park please park to the left this is because the main church hall is being used for another function and they will need access and have reserved parking on the right.

Registration, timings and information

Registration open from 10:45 – 11:30am. This will be based either be out of the small room in the back of the church hall, or in the car park, if the weather is not too bad.

SI dibbers hire is free, but lost dibbers are charged at the replacement cost of £30.

If you have your own dibber and have registered online there is no need to register on the day, just make sure you attend the briefing.

There will be an event briefing for everyone in the car park at 11:30am sharp.

The start location for Course 1 is approximately a 5-10 min walk from registration/car park. The start location for Courses 2 and 3 is approximately a 10-15 min walk.

Courses 1 and 2 – immediately after the briefing, Course 1& 2 participants will walk down with starting officials to the start location. There will be a mass start at 1145/1150.

Course 1 – Juniors will remain at registration/car park until 1200, when the starting officials will return to collect and and walk them down to their start location. Mass start at 1210.

This should mean that participants on all courses finish at approximately the same time and Juniors do not have to wait too long after they finish their run for parents to finish and return.

🏆Prize Giving – Allowing time for people to download, the aim is to have the prize giving at 1:30pm. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed men and women on Course 3. On Course 2 prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd MW12/14s. Course 3 there will be something for all the Juniors who enter 🙂 Remember you need to be a current member to be eligible for a prize, so if your membership has lapsed, renew it now for 2024!
