Terrain Summary Portstewart is classic sand dunes Orienteering terrain. The area is unusual in that it is bounded by the sea to the north and by the River Bann to the south and west. In recent years large amounts of thorny scrub have been removed by the National Trust. This has increased runnability and opened up new sections of terrain. Some of this area is relatively fast with a simple, but indistinct, path network, but the far west section has few paths and the contour detail here is particularly complex. There are a number of fences in these areas and gate crossings must be used.

Notes/Courses 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Groups will be organised into people with the same level of technical ability, each having a dedicated coach:
O-Play – for children in P3 and under, accompanied by their parents.
⚪🟡 Technical Difficulty (TD) 1 and 2 (White and Yellow) Easy courses with all controls mostly on linear features such as paths, walls and streams. Suitable for P4 children and above and adult newcomers who want a gentle introduction to orienteering.
🟠 TD 3 (Orange) Courses use basic use of a compass and route choice. Ideal for novice orienteers or young juniors with experience (ideally aged 10 and above).
🟢🔵🟤 TD4 and 5 (Lt Green, Green, Blue and Brown) Challenging navigation with route choice and using more contour and point features suitable for experienced juniors and adults.
Kit requirements 🧥👖 Full body cover is mandatory. If the weather is cold or wet – a waterproof jacket will be mandatory. As well as times of exercise there will be periods of coaching when you will be stationary, so layer up – bring along a hat and gloves to keep comfortable. There is likely to be a bag drop off point with a coach present or close by. NOTE: the club or coach is not responsible for the safe keeping of the kit, it is dropped off at your own risk, so please leave any valuables in the car. All should carry whistles. Bring a compass if you use and have one. Some base plate and thumb compasses will be available to borrow and try out. Dibbers are not required.
Parking Parking is on the beach. Please note that the National Trust charges non-members £8.00 per car to drive on the beach. If you are a member please remember to bring your card.
