Terrain Summary The terrain consists of forested areas and sand dunes with uneven ground, thickets, brambles/nettles, some fences, pits and steep sloped areas. There are several fences. The safety bearing is due North. This will take you back to the internal access road bounding the area and from there you can locate the car park. Extreme care should be taken in when crossing stiles.

The area also contains range debris, some of which may be unexploded ordnance, and range infrastructure. Under no circumstances touch, kick or pick up any items lying on the ground. Do not engage with or play on range infrastructure, which includes open trenches on the ranges and target pits / mechanisms both on the ranges and in the competition area. Please ensure children are always supervised closely when not running.

The area has livestock, so ticks are present, with the risk of Lyme’s Disease. Please check for ticks on completion of your run.

The sand dunes lead to a beach and the sea. The coaching area is bounded by fences to the south, preventing accidental access.

Notes/Courses 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Groups will be organised into people with the same level of technical ability, each having a dedicated coach:
O-Play – for children in P3 and under, accompanied by their parents.
⚪🟡 Technical Difficulty (TD) 1 and 2 (White and Yellow) Easy courses with all controls mostly on linear features such as paths, walls and streams. Suitable for P4 children and above and adult newcomers who want a gentle introduction to orienteering.
🟠 TD 3 (Orange) Courses use basic use of a compass and route choice. Ideal for novice orienteers or young juniors with experience (ideally aged 10 and above).
🟢🔵🟤 TD4 and 5 (Lt Green, Green, Blue and Brown) Challenging navigation with route choice and using more contour and point features suitable for experienced juniors and adults.
Kit requirements 🧥👖 Full body cover is mandatory. If the weather is cold or wet – a waterproof jacket will be mandatory. As well as times of exercise there will be periods of coaching when you will be stationary, so layer up – bring along a hat and gloves to keep comfortable. There is likely to be a bag drop off point with a coach present or close by. NOTE: the club or coach is not responsible for the safe keeping of the kit, it is dropped off at your own risk, so please leave any valuables in the car. All should carry whistles. Bring a compass if you use and have one. Some base plate and thumb compasses will be available to borrow and try out. Dibbers are not required.
