Event Description

Orienteering the Cosmos at Armagh Planetarium

🕍 The British Sprint Orienteering Championships are taking place in Armagh, Ireland’s ecclesiastical capital.

🔭Did you also know that Armagh also has the longest continuously operating astronomical observatory in the British Isles as well as its oldest planetarium? Still an active centre for astronomy, Armagh has a remarkable scientific heritage, with six generations of astronomical telescope, including the oldest telescope in world still in its original dome.

🧭The Armagh Observatory and Planetarium’s Director, Professor Michael Burton, will give a special planetarium show for the orienteers coming to this year’s British Championships in Armagh. Michael has been orienteering for more years than he has been an astronomer and his show will feature a tour of the cosmos – from Solar System to the Big Bang – while taking in a few of the orienteering areas you might have encountered while in Ireland. ☘

🌌This special show will take place in Armagh Planetarium on Friday 5th of May, 1-2pm, prior to the Hillsborough Forest Middle Distance Training activity which is less than 45minutes away and has start times from 4-6pm.

💰For full details and booking visit: Armagh Observatory & Planetarium website, select “Book Now”, then browse the “Full Show and Event Listing”. Choose “Orienteering the Cosmos” and use the Promo Code Armagh2023. Cost is £9 for Adults and £6.50 for Children (under 16). Full details on the website.

🪐Note that there will be a full programme of shows running in the planetarium on Saturday 6th of May (on the hour, from 10am to 4pm). However, the timetable for the competition means that it is unlikely you will be able to go to a show if you are taking part in it. Full details for all the shows available that day can be obtained from the same website address above.
