Happy WEE Volunteers make Happy WEE Orienteers!

On Wednesday night we saw the second instalment of the May WEE Series.

Around 60 orienteers navigated their way round the grounds of UUJ. How is it the accommodation block always trips me up? – A large part down to the good planning of Billy Reed.

The previous Wednesday, first time planner Henry Montgomery also had about 60 of us darting about Ormeau. Great courses to enjoy on another wonderful evening.

So these two sets of results allow us to have the first look at how things are shaping up in the WEE May league!

Yes that’s right the WEE handicap League is back – Geoffrey Collins has worked his magic and our times have been adjusted to take into account gender and age. This means a W70 can compete with and beat a M21.

Our best three out of the four runs in May are counted, with prizes for the top three male and female athletes and for Juniors too. Then we do it all again in June!

Presently M55 Alan Kerr and W40 Beverley Gaston are sitting on top of the Long League. On the Short Course, Oonagh Reeve is just ahead of her fellow W10 Jennifer Dawson with M12 Luke Wilkins sitting in third place. With Lady Dixon and Stormont still to come there is lots to play for! The coordinator for this month’s WEE is Chris Colwell, ably assisted by Aine McCann – thank you for all the hard work you put in for members and the wider community to enjoy.

Thank you also to those who have volunteered to print maps (Alan Gartside) and collect controls (Yann Thomasson and Brian and Matthew Crothers) – sorry if I have missed others. Next week Brian is back involved and has planned some fun courses at Lady Dixon, so come along and enjoy some friendly competition and then some conversation and craic over refreshments after your run/walk.
