Event Format
Lagan Valley Orienteers invites you to a 12-week training course for 10s and over who are already orienteering to a yellow standard (TD2) and want to progress quickly to orange / light green (TD3/4) standard.

This course will run weekly from Sunday 28 September to Sunday 14 December 2025. Places are limited, so please only sign up if your child will be able to attend the majority of the sessions.

All children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the coaching, up to a maximum of four children per adult. This is not a drop-off service!

Sessions are primarily for children who are aged 10 to 14. If children are younger, please check out Running Wild or get in contact with us (email juniors_families@lvo.org.uk) to find out other exciting orienteering opportunities for them.

We’ll meet at either at Tollymore Forest Park’s Main Carpark or Meelmore Lodge, depending on the session.

Entry/Registration Register here!

NOTE: You only need to register once for the 12-week course.

Registration closes Midnight, Wednesday 24 September 2025
Start Times Coaching takes place 9.30am to 10.30am.

On the last Sunday of the month, our monthly Running Wild coaching will take place as normal 11am to 12.30pm for younger orienteers.

Price 💰 Training is free for members of LVO, NIOA and Orienteering Ireland. Non-members must join a club so they are insured. For 2025 membership, JOIN HERE via the British Orienteering website, selecting LVO as your club. Cost after 1 September is £4 per junior.
Terrain Summary Meelmore is open mountain side with few paths, many rock features and intricate contour details.
Previous Maps/Routegadget Meelmore was last used for a NI Colour Series in 2023. Routegadget can be found here: https://www.lvo.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#507
Notes/Courses This week we will learn all about contours – hills, reentrants, spurs, saddles and knolls. We’ll learn about index contours, contour intervals and form lines. A good introductory video can be found HERE.
Kit requirements 🧥👖 Full body cover is mandatory. This is the mountain equipment for long NIMRA races and therefore best practice to bring on mountains: https://www.nimra.org.uk/index.php/nimra-race-kit-requirements/ Please try and bring these items on Sunday, either wearing them or in a small bumbag / rucksack.

1. Waterproof jacket
2. Waterproof trousers
3. Hat
4. Gloves
5. Compass
6. Whistle
7. Foil blanket

The reason why we bring this equipment is shown really well in this 10 minute video of three runners with different amounts of kit. They run up a hill, sit down and see who gets cold first. Please watch it so we all understand how to look after ourselves on the mountain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIFNZdSjSDo

As well as times of exercise there will be periods of coaching when you will be stationary, so layer up – bring along an extra jumper, a hat and gloves to keep comfortable. There is likely to be a bag drop off point with a coach present or close by. NOTE: the club or coach is not responsible for the safe keeping of the kit, it is dropped off at your own risk, so please leave any valuables in the car.

Parking £4 per car payable at Meelmore Lodge reception.
Toilets Meelmore Lodge.
