Event Description

FINAL DETAILS for Sundays event:

The opening event of NI’s first Urban Orienteering League:

The format – Middle Distance Urban – no nettles or brambles (unless you seek them out), little mud, and you can show off your legs if you wish.

Courses: There will be three courses on offer so everyone is catered for whatever your ability and experience, be it complete beginner or NI Champion.
For the competition: 3 different classes: 12 & under, under 16’s, and Open, each split M/F with age class adjusted results so everyone starts on a level playing field. If you’re interested, all you ladies are being compared to Charlotte Ward, and all you gents to Graham Gristwood and Oystein Kvaal Osterb,o so we’ll see if we have any future stars in our midsts.

1. OPEN ( over 16’s only if unaccompanied. Under 16’s can do this course if accompanied by an adult ) : 4.2 km as the crow flies!!! It will be an A3 map, with 30 controls. The course will cross several roads, but there are no mandatory crossings. All the roads have good visibility with diagonal legs and are relatively quiet on a sunday afternoon.

2. YOUTH & NOVICE : For 13-15 year old’s who wish to run unaccompanied, and adult beginners / novices : 3.1 km as the crow flies! Your course takes part in a quiet estate before returning to the park via one MANDATORY, TIMED-OUT road crossing. You will be allowed two minutes to cross a road between controls. It can easily be walked in 90 seconds, so no-one should lose any time.

3. JUNIOR & BEGINNERS : For young kids under 13 and all family beginners; you get to play in the safe environment of the People’s Park. There will be three controls outside the Park but no-one needs to cross any roads!!! 2.2 km.

For all courses the GAA / American Football pitch will be Out of Bounds and is marked as such on the map.

All maps will also contain one enlargement of a small section of the map to help with legibility.

STARTS:
There will be two starts. The JUNIOR start will be adjacent to registration and the finish by the Park Pavilion.

The OPEN and YOUTH course will use Start 2. This is a 750m walk from the park. It is an 8 minute walk, and will be a taped route though a residential estate. There will be no clothing transfer, but the forecast looks reasonable so we shouldn’t need one.

Parking : The People’s park car park. When i sorted out the date for this event i was told parking will be fine! But i was down there last sunday for a final run round and struggled to park in the park because of american football. If the car park is full please park on the road outside the park.

Facilities : Registration will be right next to the Park Pavilion. it is equipped with toilets and last week there was a handy ice cream van nearby.

Dogs are allowed but would need to be on a lead because of the environment you will be in.
