Last Chance to Beat the Street

With the postponement of the Donard Autumn Trophy on Saturday, if you had orienteering marked in your diary for the day, then here’s an alternative.

You may be aware of Beat the Street which moves on from Belfast next Wednesday 2 November. Beat the Street is pretty similar to Street-O with Beat Boxes instead of controls attached to lampposts. Instead of a dibber you need a Beat the Street Card. The maps are also provided by Beat the Street. The control description is always “Lamppost”! So here’s the plan:

Assemble at the Orangefield Park carpark at Houston Park, Belfast, BT5 6AT from 11.30am for a noon start. If you can, please pick up in advance a free Beat the Street card from any of these locations, typically libraries, leisure centres and Tescos in Belfast, Newtownabbey and Lisburn. Note that stocks are running low so you might have to shop around. If you aren’t able to collect one please request one from me in advance as I have a stock of 9 (by commenting on this post). Preference will be for those who live outside the area.

Please also try to pick up the Beat the Street map for East Belfast (Map 2), from any of the locations in the East Belfast area. (Other areas will probably have maps of their neighbourhood.) Alternatively download and print one from the Beat the Street website, or please request one from me as I have picked up a supply and have 24. If you wish to have a map bag, please bring your own.

So we will have an informal score activity with a mass start at noon. Time limit one hour. Pick up as many Beat Boxes as you can within 60 minutes. As with all urban activities, the Highway Code is to be obeyed at all times. The use of crossings is highly recommended. Those under 16 who wish to particpate must be accompanied by an adult.
