Hawkshead Junior Training Update From Steph and Sophie

After an intrepid journey negotiating Black Friday traffic in Belfast, consulting my watch every 2 minutes on the stationary Airport Non- Express and finally paying £6 (well spent) for speedy security check, Sophie and I boarded the plane to Manchester with 2 minutes to spare. We met there with Pat ‘the Pied Piper’ McCavana and 7 M/ W16s from Dublin and divided up the kids between us. I got the boys and was treated to an eclectic musical soirée as we cruised up the M6 to the LakeDistrict and Hawkshead Youth Hostel. The forecast was appalling and after a fantastic Read More …

Training Sun 1 Nov

There will be training available this Sun at Laganlands East (see the junior training section for the location details). We will meet at 1330 in the lay by 300 m from the entrance, opposite the boat club on the other side of the river. Alison Collins has planned this technical training day and we will be focusing on control description recognition and control site locations. Please email me (juniors at lvo.org.uk) by Fri to let me know you are coming so we can print enough maps.

N Ireland Road Relays: Victoria Park Belfast

Well done the the our juniors Andrew, Peter and Rachel who took part in the N Ireland road relays at Victoria Park. They ran a fast paced race at just over 1600m (roughly a mile) and did very well, finishing one behind the other in the order given above and not that far behind the winner. There were a number of adults from the club at the race as well so well done to those that took part.

Changes to Junior Training

Due to personal circumstances I have had to adjust the junior training programme. Please make sure you take a look at the junior training page to see the plan for the rest of this year. I’m also looking for someone to plan the junior training event on the 6 Dec at Ormeau Park please. Without a volunteer this will have to be cancelled. Alan

Rachel’s Lagganlia Report

Day 1- After an early start to the catch our plane, a short visit to Edinburgh and a 3hr train journey, Andrew and I finally arrived in Aviemore. Lagganlia is an orienteering camp run annually, by the British Orienteering Federation, for athletes aged between 12 and 14 (This is the M14 age group and W14 age group). Junior Scottish 6 Days and International Selection

A number of our juniors took part in the Scottish 6 Days near Inverness this year. They all did extremely well given the challenging levels of both the terrain and of the courses themselves, many of which ran on the same areas being used in the World Orienteering Championships underway at the same time. You can see all the results at the following link. We have also just found out that the following club juniors have been selected to race for Ireland at the forthcoming Junior Home Internationals at Magilligan in Oct this year. This is a fantastic achievement and represents lots Read More …

Lagganlia Success

Our two club junior athletes that took part in the BOF training camp for W/M14s at Lagganlia in late Jul had a fantastic time. The training was first class on some very technically challenging terrain. On top of that they did everything from swimming in the sea to obstacle courses, night escape and evasion, learning to remove ticks and of course cake eating. Well done to Andrew E and Rachel C.

Athletics Race Success for Two Juniors

Well done to Andrew E and Rachel C who came 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Helen Wilkinson Memorial club race at Dromore AC on a hot a sticky night on 30 Jun. Great running guys and way to go the ‘orienteers’.

Tollymore Festival Fun for Juniors

A number of the club juniors took part in the festival at Tollymore over the 19 – 21 Jun 15, including camping over a few nights. The event started with a sprint race around Newcastle town on Friday night, including up into Donard Forest. A good few fish and chips were consumed after the race, not to mention the odd ice-cream. Saturday was the club championships across the open mountainside of Meelmore. This was tough racing terrain and the juniors did really well to put in some great times. That afternoon and evening was taken up with football, cricket, swimming Read More …
